I have been to the Toronto Zoo many times, but this was the first time I brought a decent camera with me. Here are some of my better shots of the day.

…or the always-popular hippopotamus?
Here she is showing off her swimming skills. The judges were impressed.
A new entrant this year: the hippo’s little cousin, the pygmy hippopotamus.
I think she’s going to be the winner this year 🙂
Here’s a photo of what all cats – including this pair of cheetahs – do best.
Apparently a zebra’s stripes can help it blend in with tall grasses in its native habitat, making it less visible to predators like the cheetah….but maybe the zebras walk right in front of the cheetah’s noses while they are sleeping anyway.
One of my favourite animals is the arctic fox, so I was very excited when the Toronto Zoo acquired two of them last year.
Here is one about to enjoy his lunch.
They are supposed to turn brown in the summertime, but this one is lagging behind a little.
His companion has the right idea.
This butterfly REALLY liked my friend…
….and decided to become her new hair accessory 🙂
Last but not least is an adorable baby penguin.
The Toronto Zoo is open 364 days a year. I find it particularly good to go in the colder months because of the absence of crowds and also because of the high temperatures inside many of the pavilions. It can sometimes feel like being in the tropics…which can be very helpful in February!
